about

When we interpret the very popular Ellens Dritter Gesang (also known as 'Ave Maria') by Franz Schubert as Buskers in the open air realm - we carefully take an ever-changing approach to this work:

We adapt the interpretation to the
-setting (where are we busking?),
-the mood and the feedback people passing by give us (smiles, attention, standing / rushing by, far / close)
and try to interpret the meaning and the message of the beautiful romantic german lyrics in musical expression - every time different - every time new.

This particular recording in a simple setup (Piano+Voice) features a diverse accompaniment trying to reflect scenes in the text by adapted expression. It thus moves far from the 'original' Schubertesk accompaniment - but in our eyes gives room to handle some spirit (pure beauty, love, supernatural presence and metaphysical comfort) within the works that we as free Classic Buskers can try to set free by taking the works off the leash of codified "written-down" composition.

Despite (or because?) of deliberately not taking this piece religiously we made the experience that when busking this piece in an ever-changing way (no two times the same) the passing people would react the most intensely of all songs we have ever busked.

We are -in a way- more intrigued by this effect than by the musical richness of this song. We'll therefore continue to interpret this song in different ways until it'll get boring, but we expect it to never get boring as far as we can see, as there seems endless room to put feeling, freedom and perfection into this piece and curiously watching the results and the feedback of listeners.

Thank you everybody on the streets who enjoyed this piece with us.

lyrics

Ave Maria! Jungfrau mild,
Erhöre einer Jungfrau Flehen,
Aus diesem Felsen starr und wild
Soll mein Gebet zu dir hinwehen.
Wir schlafen sicher bis zum Morgen,
Ob Menschen noch so grausam sind.
O Jungfrau, sieh der Jungfrau Sorgen,
O Mutter, hör ein bittend Kind!
Ave Maria!

Ave Maria! Unbefleckt!
Wenn wir auf diesen Fels hinsinken
Zum Schlaf, und uns dein Schutz bedeckt
Wird weich der harte Fels uns dünken.
Du lächelst, Rosendüfte wehen
In dieser dumpfen Felsenkluft,
O Mutter, höre Kindes Flehen,
O Jungfrau, eine Jungfrau ruft!
Ave Maria!

Ave Maria! Reine Magd!
Der Erde und der Luft Dämonen,
Von deines Auges Huld verjagt,
Sie können hier nicht bei uns wohnen,
Wir woll’n uns still dem Schicksal beugen,
Da uns dein heil'ger Trost anweht;
Der Jungfrau wolle hold dich neigen,
Dem Kind, das für den Vater fleht.
Ave Maria!

-

Scott’s Hymn to the Virgin[2]

Ave, Maria! maiden mild!
Oh listen to a maiden’s prayer;
For thou canst hear tho' from the wild,
And Thou canst save amid despair.
Safe may we sleep beneath thy care
Tho' banish'd outcast and reviled,
Oh, Maiden hear a maiden’s prayer.
Oh Mother, hear a suppliant child!
Ave Maria!

Ave, Maria! undefiled!
The flinty couch we now must share,
Shall seem with down of eider piled
If Thy protection hover there.
The murky cavern’s heavy air
Shall breath of Balm if thou hast smiled;
Then, Maiden hear a maiden’s prayer.
Oh Mother, hear a suppliant child!
Ave Maria!

Ave, Maria! stainless-styled!
Foul demons of the earth and air,
From this their wonted haunt exiled,
Shall flee before thy presence fair.
We bow us to our lot of care
Beneath Thy guidance reconciled,
Hear for a maid a maiden’s prayer;
And for a father bear a child!
Ave Maria!
